FARMINGTON – Harold E. Smith, 93, a resident of Pine Avenue in Livermore Falls, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 11, 1915, in Livermore Falls, the son of Samuel R. and Bernice S. (Will) Smith. He was a 1934 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. On Nov. 12, 1938, he married Lucille Rich of Livermore Falls. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe with the Army’s Harbor Craft in the Sherbourge, France area.

Upon returning from Europe, he returned to work at the Otis Paper Mill in Jay and later worked at International Paper in Jay in the stock prep department, retiring in 1979, after nearly 45 years of service. He was a member of the IP Quarter Century Club, having been recently recognized by the mill manager as one of the five oldest surviving members of the club.

He was also a member of the Church of the Nazarene of Livermore Falls and a life member of the VFW, Frank L. Mitchell, Post 3335 of Jay. He built his camp at Bear Pond and it was a great source of relaxation for him and a place where he looked forward to spending time with his family and friends. His true hobby was live steam and model railroading.

His “shop” was his basement, which became overwhelmed with his productions. He has loaned most of his model steam engines and two steam locomotives to the Railroad Museum in Boothbay.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lucille, of Livermore Falls; a brother, Ralph Smith of Jay; a sister, Ida Kretschmer of Paige, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Gloria Smith; and a sister, Eva Smith.
