HOULTON (AP) – Two Maine teenagers who tried to flee to Canada in a stolen Jeep Cherokee are in hot water.

Troopers say a 16-year-old from Augusta on a work release program from a juvenile detention center stole the vehicle and $500 belonging to his parents and fled with a 13-year-old from South Gardiner.

State Police Sgt. Julie Bergan says they were attempting to cross into Canada on Monday when they became spooked by Canadian border officials and zoomed back into the U.S. without stopping. Bergan says they were found at a gas station and taken into custody.

Both juveniles were taken to the Aroostook County Jail before being transferred back to Augusta.
