BANGOR (AP) – Maine’s Land Use Regulation Commission has given its blessing to a large-scale development plan for the Moosehead Lake region that calls for nearly 1,000 house lots, two large resorts and more than 400,000 acres of land conservation.

The commission endorsed Plum Creek Timber Co.’s plan on Wednesday following nearly 17 hours of deliberations over two days.

The final plan will be presented to Plum Creek, which can either accept or reject the package. Plum Creek project manager Luke Muzzy said the company is cautiously optimistic that the final plan is a workable one.

If Plum Creek accepts the final recommendations, LURC staff will write a document that will be presented to the commission early next year for formal approval.

The plan has drawn vocal criticism since it was first proposed 3 years. Opponents say the development is too large and out of character for the region.
