RUMFORD – The starting time was moved up to avert inclement weather, but there was no way Lake Region could avoid what the Mountain Valley did to the Lakers in a Class B Campbell Conference football game.

The Falcons remained unbeaten with a 56-0 win over Lake Region at slick Hosmer Field.

Mountain Valley (4-0) set the tone early with its stingy defense, which limited Lake Region to approximately 60 yards in rushing as outside linebackers Travis Ruff and Matt Duka, inside linebacker Matt Laubauskas and Cole Clark put the Lakers on hold. Tackles Ryan Laubauskas and Kyle Richards and ends Christian Durland and John Gorham won the battle in the trenches.

“We just worked hard,” Clark said. “The difference in countering what Lake Region tried attacking was that we read their guards and followed our keys.”

The teams traded fumbles on its respective first possessions. Dillon Burtzell for the Lakers and Durland set the Falcons up on their path of destruction. The highest scoring team in state didn’t waste time marching 77-yards in seven plays, with Justin Staires ran for a 16-yard touchdown. Staires rushed for 167 yards on 10 rushes, had four touchdowns, including a 77-yard punt return down the left side of the field.

“We talked about not approaching this game lightly,” Staires said. “We’ve got five tough games coming up, beginning with Fryeburg, and we still have things to accomplish. There was some things that we wanted to try on offensive, but the weather limited what we could run.”

Lake Region (0-4) lined up quarterback Nick Marcella in a shotgun in an attempt to avoid the Falcon pass rush. A quick kick on third and 22 yards by Travis Linehan pinned the Falcons back on their own 11-yard line. The ploy backfired when Gorham (111 yards, five rushes) ran 89 yards for a TD. Chris Day passed to Josh Allen for the two-point conversion.

The special teams shined with Duka and Tom Puiia kicking four and three extra points, respectively.

“I enjoy kicking the ball,” Duka said. “Especially on kickoffs when I can run down and be the first one to hit some one.”

Sophomore quarterback Cameron Kaubris (one pass completion to Ruff for 21 yards) ran for a 12-yard TD. Allen recovered a blocked a punt to set up a Day score and Michael Isner competed the scoring with a 5-yard plunge.

“Being able to keep our (heads) in the game wasn’t a big concern,” Puiia said. “The coaches do a good job of keeping us grounded and staying focused.”
