FARMINGTON – Gerard L. Dumont, 97, a resident of Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center for the last year and a half, died Thursday, Sept. 25. He was a former resident of Belleview Drive in Jay.

He was born in Chisholm, on Feb. 13, 1911, the son of Wilfred and Mary (Lacombe) Dumont. He attended the schools of Jay and was a graduate of Jay High School. He was employed at the local grocery stores, Pete Dumais Grocery and Moore’s Market in Livermore Falls before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.

In February 1946, he began working for International Paper at the Otis Mill in Jay; he later transferred to the Androscoggin Mill, where he worked as a scaler and later as a traffic coordinator. He retired in the spring of 1976 from his position as loading and shipping supervisor after 30 years of service.

He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. He was a member of the IP Quarter Century Club, having recently been recognized by the mill manager as the oldest Androscoggin retiree and he always looked forward to their annual summer outings. He enjoyed family gatherings and sharing stories of the “old days.” He had been an avid reader and enjoyed watching television. In past years, he enjoyed his winters in Bradenton, Fla.

He is survived by his two sisters, Dora Harris of Hallowell and Simonne Ouellette of Jay; five nieces and their spouses; four grandnieces; five grandnephews; eight great-grandnieces and nephews; and his “family” at Orchard Park.

He was predeceased by his parents; and two brothers, Roland and Louis Dumont.

The family would like to thank the staff at Orchard Park for their loving and compassionate care during Gerard’s stay there. They are grateful that he spent his last days among such wonderful, caring people.
