AUBURN – Duncan MacKenzie, 86, of Leeds and formerly of Wayne, died Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Androscoggin Hospice House, in Auburn.
He was born in Livermore on Sept. 4, 1922, the son of John and Viola (Davenport) Mackenzie.
He was a graduate of Winthrop High School and later earned a certification in aircraft repair. He worked for several years repairing aircraft in the United States until the outbreak of World War II. He then went to work repairing aircraft in places like North Africa, France, England and Germany.
After the war, he returned to Maine and worked for a short time at Wayne Woodworking. He then began a 34-year career at International Paper, retiring in 1984.
He enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, woodworking, camping, bird carving and gardening. He once built an airplane in his basement.
Duncan is survived by his wife, Arlene (Waugh) MacKenzie; his sons, Lee Moody and his wife, Gay Reeve, of Farmington and Darrel Moody and his wife, Ann, of Grove City, Fla.; his daughters, Nora Frey and her husband, Norman, of St. Louis, Mo., and Victoria Barker and her husband, David, of Leeds; his brothers, Henry Waitt, of Sarasota, Fla., and Royal Waitt of Wayne; along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
