AUBURN – A revamped Center Street Walgreens plan dispenses with a dedicated turn lane off Turner Street, according to city officials.
A traffic engineer is reviewing the latest plan for the proposed pharmacy. Planning Director David Galbraith said he’ll decide this week if the plans should go back to the developer or if they’re ready for a review by the Planning Board.
“We’ve had one public hearing on it, and they’ve made some pretty significant changes since then,” Galbraith said. “The biggest question we have right now, is what happens to the traffic.”
Developers from BCD Ventures, representing Walgreens, hope to build a 14,370-square-foot pharmacy with a drive-through on three lots on the eastern side of Center Street, immediately south of Irving Oil.
The pharmacy would replace three buildings there now – the Specialty Automotive Services shop at 1 Center St., Number One Chinese restaurant at 197 Turner and Morin Antiques at 195 Turner.
Developers originally proposed reducing the number of southbound lanes off Center Street. Southbound Center Street would gain a left-turn lane dedicated to the Walgreens and a single lane would continue south toward downtown on Turner Street.
The northern spur of Turner Street, coming from the residential neighborhoods, would have changed as well. Cars would no longer be able to turn left and go north onto Center Street; they could only go straight onto Turner Street or turn right onto Union Street.
They presented their first draft to a group of 35 neighbors in July. The crowd panned the idea, saying proposed changes to the intersection would make traffic grind to a standstill.
The latest version maintains the left turn off southbound Center Street, but lets Turner Street traffic continue up Center Street. The original plan forced that traffic into the pharmacy’s parking lot.
The new version also keeps a lane going south from Center Street onto southbound Turner Street.
