A Farmington man who led police on a car chase Friday night and then escaped on foot into the woods with his girlfriend and son in tow surrendered to police Saturday night.
Kirk Hamel, 36, was arrested and charged with eluding an officer, criminal speeding and driving to endanger.
He turned himself in to police at 8:40 p.m. Saturday and was released on $500 bail from the Oxford County Jail later that night.
Hamel, his girlfriend, Angela Ames, and his son led police on a search through the Byron woods following a car chase on Route 17 that exceeded speeds of 90 miles per hour in heavy rain.
Hamel turned his Jeep down an unimproved gravel road off Route 17 about two miles north of Coos Canyon.
The road dead-ends on the east flank of Pleasant Mountain, and police searched the area on foot with the help of a Franklin County Sheriff’s Office tracking dog.
According to Trooper Adam Fillebrown, Hamel turned himself to troopers then was transported to the jail.
He said Hamel was initially reported to be armed and dangerous because he had a pocket knife on him.
