WILTON – Joseph D. Small, 94, of Wilton, died peacefully in the comfort of his own home Sunday, Sept 28.

He was born April 20, 1914, in Westbrook, the son of Joseph D. and Tressa (Warren) Small. He received his education in Westbrook schools and was a graduate of Brown University. On May 18, 1940, he married Dalen S. Stoker. She predeceased him on Oct. 21, 1995. He was a veteran, having served with the 2nd Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II. He participated in assault landings in the South Pacific and retired from the Marine Corps as first lieutenant.

For many years, he was employed at Eagle Picher Industries and retired as sales manager of the packaging division and subsequently moved from Lathrup Village, Mich., to Wilton.

He was a member of the Wilton Congregational Church UCC; the Wilton Masonic Lodge 156; and the Wilton Lions Club. He valued education and his personal interests included golf, gardening and watching the changing seasons in the backyard of his apple orchard.

Survivors include his children, Joseph D. Small III and his wife, Valerie, of Louisville, Ky., Linda E. Small and her husband, Mike Huber, of Harmony, Pa., S. Gregory Small of Davisburg, Mich., and Lisa D. Small of Wilton; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Harriet Travis.
