LEWISTON – Alvin E. Withey, 64, of New Vineyard, died early Tuesday morning at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born Jan. 17, 1944 in New Vineyard, the second of three children to Merwyn A. and Jenny A. Withey. He attended Farmington schools, graduating in 1963. In September of 1964, he married Donna C. Carsley and they had four children and divorced in 1979.

Al worked in carpentry and general contracting until poor health forced his retirement officially in 1994. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his grandchildren and playing with heavy equipment. He particularly enjoyed his excavator and dancing whenever his breathing would allow.

He is survived by his girlfriend, Marcia Collins; his children, Dr. Lois C. Hamel and her husband, Dennis, of Auburn, Betsy Baxter and her husband, Dennis, of New Sharon, Carol Buck and her fiancé, Rick Hisler, of Wilton and Douglas Withey and his wife, Paula, of New Vineyard; other children he helped raise, namely Micah Durgin, of Starks; seven grandchildren, Tammy Buck, Jenny, Jessica, Erica and Gregory Baxter and Taylor and Courtney Withey; two sisters, Janet Metcalf and Joyce Dubay; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his former wife.
