In his letter Sept. 11, Lou Giard made some valid points. There were, however, a couple items a little off base. I don’t believe that Rep. Tom Allen desires the best for the public.
During the summer, I had a chance to speak with Allen briefly and asked him why I have to pay income tax on my Social Security benefits. We disagreed on the issue.
I was unhappy that Allen wouldn’t listen to me, and that he turned and walked away.
I don’t believe he works for the people.
If those in Congress work for the public, how come they set their own salary? Why doesn’t the public do it for them?
Barack Obama is correct in his theme for change. This nation needs change, and I think it should start in Washington. Most of the nation’s ills can be tied to the politicians. They can control the oil prices, but won’t bite the hand that feeds them. It is the same with drug companies and farm subsidies. Politicians cater to special interests; the people re-elect them to continue the circle.
Term limits should be instituted in Washington for all politicians, not just the office of president.
Voters should vote against incumbents in November and use write-ins if necessary.
