BANGOR (AP) – A 26-year-old Bangor woman is free on bail after being charged with aiding in the escape of an inmate from the Charleston Correctional Center.
Authorities said the inmate, 31-year-old William McDevitt, walked away from the minimum-security prison Tuesday and was apprehended later that day at the home of Melissa Grant.
Investigators said a review of phone records for the days leading up to the escape led them to Grant, whose vehicle matched the description of one in which McDevitt was seen leaving the Charleston area.
McDevitt had little more than a year remaining on his two-year sentence, primarily for thefts and burglaries in York and Cumberland counties. Officials said he could face up to five years for the escape attempt.
