Recently I had lunch with some friends at an Auburn restaurant. When we came out, I saw a piece of paper under my wiper blade. I immediately thought that someone had hit the car. Thank goodness, that was not the case.

On the piece of paper were written the words: “Thank you for serving. We love and appreciate our military!”

To whomever wrote that note, thank you.

My husband did two tours in Vietnam, among other places, in his 20 years of service. It’s nice to know that someone appreciates him, now.

We have “Disabled veteran” plates on our car, and also a sticker that says “Disabled American Veterans Life Member.” My husband is commander of Emilien Hamann Chapter 11 of the DAV. It has a membership of more than 1,000, but when they meet, the third Thursday of each month, attendees can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

How sad.
