PORTLAND (AP) – The Portland Symphony Orchestra will have a new leader at the helm this week.

Robert Moody is the 12th music director in the orchestra’s 85-year history. He replaces longtime conductor Toshiyuki Shimada, who left at the close of the 2005-2006 symphony season after 20 seasons.

The 42-year-old Moody is already familiar to many members of the symphony audience, having conducted the orchestra several times this spring and summer.

But Tuesday’s season-opening concert is the start of his first full season as music director, allowing him to choose all the selections on the season’s programs and to inject his mark on the music.
