AUBURN – Thelma L Scanlon, 90, of 75 Bennett Ave., died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Oct. 5, at Clover Manor Nursing Home.
She was born March 8, 1918, a daughter of Frank and Cora Draper Field.
In Lowell, she was an active member of the Hochflieger Ski Club, Ailanthus Society and the Elliot Service League of which she was a charter member. In 1945, she married Gerard Scanlon, who passed away in 1980.
She and Gerard moved to Auburn in 1950, where she was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper until 1973, at which time she retired. She was a member of the High Street Congregational Church and its parish league, also a member and past officer of the United Commercial Traveler’s Women’s Association, Central Maine Medical Center’s Women’s Association, corporator of the Central Maine Healthcare Corporation, Robin Dow Senior Citizens, First Auburn Senior Citizens, charter member of the Fairlawn Golf Club and co-originator and past officer of the Fairlawn Women’s Association, former 30-year member of the Freedom Bowling League.
She also served as a volunteer at the Central Maine Medical Center for 17 years, and was an active bridge player, still playing with the bridge club she started in 1962.
She is survived by a daughter, Darlene and her husband, Thomas Heikkinen, of Turner; a son, Gardner Scanlon of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Bradley Heikkinen and his wife, Ronda, of Turner, Jill Heikkinen of Auburn and Scott Scanlon of Lewiston; a great-granddaughter, Paige; and a great-grandson, Dennis.
Besides her husband of 35 years, she was predeceased by two brothers, Wendell and Eldred Field.
