It seems to me that people such as Mark Cushman (letter, Sept. 28) should think more about the meaning of the word “pro-life.” It was coined only because “anti-choice” sounds unAmerican, but it will always mean anti-choice.
Only people who are pro-choice have the option to choose life over death. Being truly pro-life offers no choice other than to protect all life. That would eliminate the choice of going to war where people’s lives are at risk. It would also eliminate using firearms of any kind for hunting, or killing any living thing, including an intruder.
In making a choice, a person becomes pro-choice.
Our Founding Fathers were using black-powder weapons when they wrote the 2nd Amendment. They could not possibly have imagined the kinds of weaponry currently available. If they had, they may well have reworded the part permitting the militia, which consisted of local volunteer farmers, to bear only certain arms available in every home to hunt game and to feed families.
Who hunts game with pistols, machine guns or automatic rifles?
