AUBURN – An Auburn man was indicted Wednesday, accused of hacking a former co-worker with a machete in late August.
Neil Donovan, 35, of 561 Broad St., was indicted on charges of attempted murder and elevated assault in the Aug. 29 attack at Morton Buildings on Minot Avenue.
According to court documents, Donovan told 65-year-old James Milbrath, “I am going to cut your head off,” while swinging the machete at him.
Milbrath escaped with minor injuries and was treated overnight at a Lewiston hospital. Donovan was arrested moments after the attack when he ran to a nearby store, leaving a trail of blood along Minot Avenue.
Milbrath is a manager at the building supply company. Police said Donovan had worked there roughly a year before the attack.
Moments after Milbrath was slashed, witnesses told police a man fled the building and ran to Leighton’s Neighborhood Store on the other side of Minot Avenue.
Police who went to the store found Donovan there and quickly arrested him. He was charged with elevated aggravated assault and taken to the Androscoggin County Jail where he has remained.
Now that he has been indicted, Donovan will be scheduled to make a court appearance to answer the charges against him.
