LISBON – The team that claimed the one-goal lead at halftime wasn’t the team that played the better first half Wednesday.
Lisbon watched Winthrop control much of the play in the first 40 minutes, but it was the Greyhounds that had the lead.
“We started out playing well and knocked one in,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle. “Then it seemed like we were going through the motions out there. We’d lose a little bit of focus. We were kicking the ball more than passing the ball. When we do that, the girls get running around too much and get a little out of sync.”
Winthrop couldn’t take advantage and a strong second half enabled Lisbon to take a 3-0 win over the Ramblers.
“It was the same way the first game,” said Winthrop coach Marc Fortin. “We dominated play and outshot them. We ended up losing 2-0. They scored with seven minutes to go. It seems like deja vu all over again.”
Ashley Beaulieu and Tara Metzger had the goals in the first victory over Winthrop and the two produced the first two tallies Wednesday. Brooke Lawrence added the third. Beaulieu added a pair of assists.
“The 1-0 lead isn’t very high for us,” said Beaulieu. “We needed to get more to keep them away. It was kind of scary to have domination like that in the first half.”
Beaulieu scored on Lisbon’s first shot of the game at 3:11. Sierra Guay crossed the ball and Beaulieu redirected it.
“I wasn’t really expecting it to come across,” said Beaulieu. “I knew Sierra would get it in there. She’s really good at feeding it to me. One timing it was the best way to go.”
Despite giving up the goal, Winthrop had the stronger first half, outshooting the Greyhounds 5-2. The Ramblers, however, couldn’t produce the quality shot needed. Lisbon keeper Sam Purcell was solid in net while the defense around her was sound and composed. The Ramblers pressured the Lisbon defense constantly, but the Greyhounds (9-1-2) battled hard and never allowed a prime scoring chance.
“The defense did play pretty tough,” said Gentle. “(Winthrop) was a pass away or a bounce away from getting a good look at it.”
Winthrop’s best chances came on a Karen Rice shot from the right side that Purcell caught, and Ashley Marcellino chipped one over the net.
“We pretty much dominated,” said Fortin. “The girls were discouraged at halftime. I was like, ‘We’re right in this game. We’re playing the No. 2 team in Class B and we’re the No. 4 team in Class C.’ We had nothing to hang our heads down about.”
Winthrop (6-4-1) kept working for the equalizer in the second half. Lindsey Gordon threatened with a direct kick and a corner kick but couldn’t score. The Ramblers had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Lisbon improved its passing and began pressuring the other way in the second half. That led to Beaulieu working hard on the left side to get open for a cross that Metzger redirected with 9:46 left.
“I figured someone was making the run,” said Beaulieu. “They always make a run and are always there. I knew I had to get the ball across. I just had to work my magic basically and get past them.”
Winthrop’s scoring try came on a late Erika Rice shot, but Purcell made a superb kick save. Then with 3:43 left, Lawrence finished off a Beaulieu centering pass.
