AUBURN – Dr. Louis Fishman, 86, of 223 Lake St., Auburn, died Monday, Oct. 6, at his home.

He was born in Detroit, Mich., on March 24, 1922, the son of Morris and Sara Bagg Fishman. In the 1930s, he moved with his family to Burlington, Vt. Educated in Burlington schools, he graduated from Burlington High School, Class of 1941, and the University of Vermont, Class of 1944. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a communication officer, and was discharged as an ensign.

On June 22, 1947, he married the former Dorothy Ann Sussman. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Vermont Medical School, and after his internship and residency programs opened a solo practice in thoracic surgery in Lewiston. Board certified in both general and thoracic surgery, he was on the staff of Central Maine Medical Center and the courtesy staff at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. He eventually served as both the president of the medical staff and as chief of surgery at CMMC, retiring in 1986.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, of Auburn; a daughter, Deborah and husband, Andrew Cohen, of Manchester, NH; two sons, Philip and wife, Barbara, of Peachtree City, Ga., and Kenneth and wife, Catherine, of Grand Island, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Gabriel Cohen, Cara and husband, Chris Veilleux, and Anna, Sarah, and Laura Fishman.
