Participants from the Maine Credit Union League and 10 Maine credit unions were in Washington, D.C., from September 16-18, as part of the twice-a-year meetings that credit unions hold with the delegation in the nation’s Capital. The trip, which occurred right around the same time that the turmoil in the financial markets picked up speed, enabled Maine’s credit unions to help answers questions from the delegation on the impact, safety and soundness of Maine’s credit unions.

“Our delegation again appreciated the fact that Maine credit unions were not involved with the sub-prime lending that precipitated this crisis, and took comfort in the efforts of credit unions to work with consumers to help them understand federal savings insurance. Our delegation also hailed some of the creative ways, such as the energy loans, that Maine credit unions were responding to assist Maine consumers in a difficult economy,” remarked League President John Murphy.
