WATERFORD – Chris Gatchell edged last year’s winner, Timothy Even, to capture the Waterford Fall Foliage 5-kilometer road race Sunday.
Gatchell, of Waterford and Portland, had a winning time of 16:51 over Even’s time of 17:01.
The ninth-annual race was run under blue skies with a colorful backdrop. It was held in conjunction with a chili cook-off run by the Bridgton Chamber of Commerce and was the largest race in the event’s history. The race benefited the Tony Waldeier Scholarship, given every spring to Waterford students graduating from Oxford Hills. Waldeier taught many years at Waterford Memorial Elementary School.
Claire Cummings of Norway came in first overall in the female category with a time of 21:11, with Joanie Albers (21:55) second and Jackie Kramer (23:11) of Littleton, Colo., third. Colorado’s Ben Kramer was third in the men’s race with a time of 18:15.
Abigail Hewes, 6, of Denmark, won her category in the 1-mile fun run with a time of 9:13. Daniel Chizmar of Lewiston led the boys in 8:34. Jordan Johnson of Milford, N.H., came in first in the girls’ 7-12 age group with a time of 7:36, with Keegan Nelligan of Abington, Mass., leading the boys at 7:07.
