GREENE – Roland J. Cyr, 87, of Hills Ridge Road, Greene, died Monday morning, Oct. 13, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in Van Buren on Nov. 15, 1920, the son of the late Joseph V.F. and Donalda Berube Cyr. He was educated in local schools and attended Bliss Business College and Auburn Maine School of Commerce.

Roland served his country in the U.S. Army, engineering battalion, from 1942 to 1946 and was the recipient of the Purple Heart.

He married Theresa M. Morin on Dec. 27, 1945, at Saints Peter and Paul Church.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as assistant foreman and bookkeeper at Bates Mill. He later worked for the Maine State Liquor Commission and did tax accounting out of his home.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a founding member of Our Lady of the Rosary Credit Union, D.A.V. Chapter 11, American Legion Post No. 135, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus Council No. 13181 of Sabattus and the Rev. Peter Conroy Fourth Degree Assembly at Holy Family Church, A.A.R.P., Horizon 55 and was a Dominican Associate in Sabattus.

He was a scholar, always reading a book and keeping busy. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and selling his produce at local farmer’s markets.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa, of Greene; four daughters, Sister Dolores (Rolande) M. Cyr, O.P., of Iowa City, Iowa, Gloria M. Cormier, Louise M. Moreau and her husband, Daniel, all of Greene, and Susan A. Cyr of Monmouth; four sons, Robert R. Cyr and his wife Teresa of Greene, Rosaire J. Cyr of Lewiston, Joseph L.Cyr and his wife, Denis, of Lewiston and John J. Cyr and his wife, Belinda, of Greene; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and was expecting his fifth great-grandchild in May 2009; four sisters, Emily Audet of Lewiston, Estelle Levasseur and her husband, Clarence, of Connecticut, Yvonne Cyr and her husband, Armand, of Edmundston, New Brunswick, and Patricia Morneault and her husband, Louis, of Scarborough; and one brother, Raymond Cyr of Windsor, Connecticut.

He was predeceased by his parents; an infant daughter, Dolores M. Cyr; two brothers, Normand and Arthur Cyr; a son-in-law, Norman Cormier; a sister-in-law, Katherine Cyr; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Audet.
