Q: A Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) Program has been added to the Academic Advocate Programs at Lisbon High School this year. Twenty minutes of each school day everyone in the school reads. Studies show students who read succeed. Time spent reading 20 minutes a day equates to 500,000 words read per year-resulting in standardized test scores in the 50 percent percentile. What are your thoughts about the new Sustained Silent Reading?
Ashley, Mercer
Senior
A. I think that SSR is a good idea because it gives students an opportunity to do better in school and on our tests. Also, it is good to read because I like getting a break.
Frank Angelico
Junior
A: I like the SSR but I think the rules are too strict. SSR would be better if it could be more relaxed.
Ashley Longley
Freshman
A: I like to talk and reading makes it boring. I don’t care for SSR during Advocacy.
Jill Denniston
LHS Science Teacher
/Senior Advocacy
A: SSR is great! My seniors are all reading and I’m getting a chance to read too. It’s also a time to relax and take a break from work.
Amanda Fuller
Senior
A: I think SSR should be during English class instead of Advocacy. Advocacy use to be a place to work and now it has to be quiet.
