PORTLAND – Thalia P. Curtis, 87, of Portland, formerly of West Paris, Wilton and Saco, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Fallbrook Woods Assisted Living Center, Portland, after a long illness.
She was born in Ridlonville, now known as Mexico, on June 22, 1921, the daughter of Frank A. and Nellie (Parsons) Proctor Jr. Thalia was the last living sibling from a family of 12 children. She attended Mexico schools and graduated from Mexico High School in the class of 1940. On Aug. 24, 1940, she married E. D. Curtis Jr.
She served on the Norway Hospital board and worked at the hospital when it first opened. She taught Sunday school at the Universalist Church in West Paris, before moving to Farmington.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as secretary of the Farmington chapter and in West Paris. She was a past grand representative of New Jersey, a past grand representative of the British Isles (Scotland and Australia) and a past district deputy grand matron of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Wilton; a member of the Franklin County extension, Wilton; and a member of the Franklin Memorial Hospital auxiliary in Farmington. She was also a member of the Wilton Historical Society and for several years, she taught the girls in the 4-H Club.
She loved animals, birds and nature, painting with oils, fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, traveling and especially playing games with her family and friends.
She is survived by three sons, James E. Curtis and wife, Patricia, of Marco Island, Fla., David P. Curtis and wife, Ronnie, of New Gloucester and Thomas D. Curtis and wife, Sibyl, of Hollis; as well as six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ellsworth D. Curtis Jr. who died in 1997; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters; and her 11 siblings.
