The Veterans Memorial Park, located at the end of the Longley Bridge in Lewiston, is truly a regional landmark. The monuments in the park honor all veterans, living and deceased, whether they have served in peace time or in time of war.

We should all visit this beautiful spot as frequently as possible to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed so much to serve their country over the years, with so many having made the ultimate sacrifice.

“Support the troops” should not be just a slogan on a bumper sticker. Let us show our support by visiting the park that honors them. Let us say a heart-felt thank-you for what they have done to ensure the freedom that we, too often, take for granted.

Let us honor, as well, the fine veterans who have worked so diligently to establish this local treasure. Joseph Paradis has worked tirelessly and at great length to bring this project to fruition. Others, too numerous to mention, also joined in the effort, an effort that continues to grow with time.

So take a few minutes from your busy schedule to stop by the park and say a prayer of thanks to all for a job well done. That is the least we can do.
