BOSTON (AP) – Extra security was planned for a Boston police promotion exam to ensure those charged with upholding the law don’t cheat to get ahead.

About 700 police officers taking the exam in Boston on Saturday were to be screened with a security wand for electronic devices. They also had to put personal belongings in a clear bag under their seats.

Two police captains were assigned there in case anyone needed to be escorted out.

The changes come after the state had to scrap the results of a Boston firefighter promotion exam last year. An anonymous tipster charged that some firefighters went into the bathroom and used cell phones to text answers to colleagues.

A police spokeswoman told The Boston Globe police welcome the scrutiny to ensure the tests are not tainted.
