WILTON – Two Wilton men face drug charges after a police officer conducting an interview on an unrelated matter smelled marijuana at a Voter Hill Road residence.

Donald Nuttall, 36, was charged on misdemeanor charges of marijuana cultivation and trafficking in a scheduled drug, Wilton police officer Joshua King said.

James Sweenhart, 35, was charged with cultivating marijuana, King said.

Police received a complaint on Oct. 10 about a possible animal cruelty case of a cat being struck by a BB on Voter Hill Road, according to a police statement.

While assisting Animal Control Officer Wayne Atwood, King said he was interviewing people in the neighborhood and noticed the odor of marijuana at a residence while talking with Sweenhart.

Sweenhart “confessed that he had a small amount of marijuana inside the residence,” King said. Sweenhart gave King a small bag of marijuana and after further questioning, Sweenhart confessed that he and his roommate, Donald Nuttall, had several marijuana plants growing inside and outside the residence, King said.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence and King, officer Scott Nile and Chief Dennis Brown searched the property.

Items seized included 14 marijuana plants in varying stages of growth with an estimated street value of about $10,000, some unidentified mushrooms, hypodermic needles, a digital scale, a small amount of processed marijuana, drug ledgers and a large number of prescription bottles in the defendants’ names, King said.
