Auburn’s new police matron, Mrs. Nellie Fellows, is receiving many calls for clothing of all kinds. She urges that Auburn housewives, in doing their fall housecleaning, remember this fact and send to her any cast-off garments for men, women or children.

• Dr. H.E.E. Stevens of this city was one of the party with Arista Webber of Auburn, who recently made such a successful hunting trip up in the woods of Northern Maine. The doctor is a fine shot and his well-directed aim brought down two big deer. These he is now sharing with his many friends.

Directors of the Lewiston-Auburn Railroad Co., a joint municipal corporation which owns the right-of-way of the Grand Trunk Railway Co., now owned by Canadian National Railroad, will meet next Wednesday in Lewiston with a railroad official for what probably will be a discussion about passenger service. Lewiston City Clerk Lucien Lebel announced yesterday the session has been requested by Kenneth Baird, Canadian National Railroad attorney, and that a passenger service official will accompany him.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in the mayor’s office at the city building.

Seven knocks of a hammer and it was done.

Maine’s first Hebrew day school, the Central Maine Hebrew Academy in Lewiston, was dedicated in accordance with Jewish tradition Sunday with the placing of the first of nine mezuzot on the school’s doors.

The school is located at the Jewish Community Center on College Street.

Like the mezuzot, a tiny encased scroll which serves to remind Jews of the word of God, the new school is designed to “reinvigorate new families with old traditions and culture,” Rabbi Morris Bornstein said.

“The new school will help bring about the cultural renaissance we all feel is needed in this community,” he said.

The school which opened earlier this fall, currently teaches children in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first and second grades.
