LEWISTON – The Maine Cancer Foundation is seeking corporate and individual support for its third annual Pink Tulip Project planting. For the past two years, 5,000 pink tulip bulbs have been planted at community gardens throughout Lewiston, such as Veteran’s Memorial Park, the Main Street median, Bates College, Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. This year’s Lewiston/Auburn planting is scheduled to take place in the next two weeks.

The Pink Tulip Project commemorates the challenge of breast cancer and the celebration of hope that research and education provide, as well as raises funds for the Maine Cancer Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Fund.

“Thanks to the generosity and support of our wonderful community and corporate partners in Lewiston, our Pink Tulip Project numbers have tripled. This year we will be planting 1,500 pink tulip bulbs in Lewiston/Auburn,” said Joanne Jordan, special events manager, Maine Cancer Foundation. “Pink Tulip Project community gardens create a sense of hope and renewal for Maine cancer patients and their families.”

Within the next few weeks, nearly 40,000 pink tulip bulbs will be planted at public garden sites across Maine. This is triple the number of bulbs first planted in the fall of 2006.

Interested participants may contact the Maine Cancer Foundation at 773-2533. Donations can be made at www.pinktulipproject.org or mailed to Pink Tulips, Maine Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 553, Portland, ME 04112.

The Pink Tulip Project was founded by Robin Whitten of Portland after her 2004 breast cancer diagnosis.

All proceeds from the Pink Tulip Project benefit the Maine Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research and finding hope for the people of Maine. All funds raised remain in Maine. For more information, visit www.mainecancer.org, call 773-2533 or toll free in Maine, 1-866-627-2411.
