PARIS – A man arrested in connection to a stabbing in Norway last summer has been indicted on charges of aggravated attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault.
Steven R. Piirainen, 47, of Coldwater Brook Road in Oxford, is charged in the June 9 stabbing of 44-year-old Steven Toothaker of Oxford. The incident occurred in the hallway of an apartment building at 9 King St., where Toothaker was visiting friends.
According to police reports, Piirainen asked Toothaker for money and attacked him when Toothaker said he did not have any. Toothaker was stabbed five times in the neck, shoulder, arm and abdomen.
Toothaker walked to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway where he received stitches and orthopedic surgery for his injuries. He was later taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment.
Piirainen was arrested at one of his known residences on Ryerson Hill Road in Paris after the incident.
The indictment states that Piirainen intended to commit murder. It also states that Piirainen was convicted of aggravated assault in Androscoggin County in 2004.
According to Sun Journal archives, Piirainen and another man were charged with beating a man in his apartment and robbing him of marijuana and cash before leading police on a high speed chase in 2003.
Piirainen’s bail was set at $75,000 cash or $150,000 worth of real estate in South Paris District Court following the stabbing. According to court documents, Piirainen made bail on June 18 on two real estate liens.
Piirainen is not to possess alcohol, drugs, or dangerous weapons and submit to random search and tests; is not to have contact with Toothaker; and is not to be at or near 9 King St.
Both charges are Class A felonies punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
