BUCKFIELD – Voters will elect one of four candidates for selectman on Nov. 4. Seeking the seat are Pearly Lovejoy, John Lowell, Roger Bennett and Alan Young.

The vacancy on the Board of Selectmen was created by the recent death of Selectmen Oscar Gammon.

Selectman voted to adopt an ordinance on posting roads for heavy trucks. A resident had requested that two roads be posted, but selectmen have no authority to grant the request, so Town Manager Glen Holmes decided to draft an ordinance that would go to voters for approval.

Trucks affected by the posting would be commercial vehicles with more than two axles. Exemptions would include emergency vehicles, moving vans, school buses, trucks belonging to trucking companies established on a street and oil delivery trucks.

The board gave Holmes the OK to seek bids for a lease for a backhoe loader. Bids are due in the Town Office on Nov. 18. The town is without a loader, which will be needed this winter.

Selectmen accepted a bid of $20,000 for a power screen/shaker for road crews and authorized Holmes to put money in a reserve account for a future sand and salt shed. He also was authorized to start the permit process for a shed with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and to have soil at the site near the town garage checked.

There will be no selectmen meeting on Nov. 4, Election Day.
