AUBURN – John. “Jack” P. Zollo, 83, of Washington Street, Rumford, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Hospice House on Stetson Road, Auburn, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Beverly, Mass., to John P. and Helen V. (Flynn) Zollo. Jack grew up in Danvers and graduated from Holton High School in Danvers, Mass. His college attendance was interrupted by his service in the Armed Forces during World War II.

Upon completion of his military obligations, Jack returned to the University of Maine at Orono, earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering with the Class of 1949. He also earned the distinction of being UMO’s first “Little All American” football player.

After college and a brief period in New York, Jack settled in Rumford, where he was employed by the Rumford Falls Power Company as a superintendent. On May 18, 1957, Jack married Louise M. McCray in Rumford.

Jack became highly active in civic and governmental affairs locally, statewide and nationally. Local affiliations included the Rotary Club, VFW, Elks Club, American Legion and he was a fourth degree knight in the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Louise of Rumford; and their four children, daughter, Diane and her husband, Russell Thompson, of South Thomaston, daughter, Gloria and her husband, Michael Berry, of Rumford, son, Scott and his partner, Rick Chavez, of Long Beach, Calif. and son, Timothy Zollo, of Charleston, S.C.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Christine Simmonds, Jennifer Simmonds, Heather Thompson, Jason Berry, Meagan Berry, Sarah Berry, Allison Berry and Ashlyn Petty; his great-granddaughter, Marlee Timmons; his mother-in-law, Rena R. McCray; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Katherine Beard, and her husband, Eugene, his father-in-law, Lawrence “Tony” McCray, his sister-in-law, Linda McCray Marr, and his grandson, John Simmonds II.
