“Now that the time for winter sports is almost here,” says an Auburn man, “I wish some person with a large purse and philanthropic inclinations would erect a toboggan shoot for the young folks to enjoy this winter. We have hardly a hill in the two cities where it is safe to slide, on account of teams. Some day there is going to be a serious collision.”

• Miss Cora B. Smith will return from market Thursday with the latest novelties in ladies’ furnishings. The opening of her new store in Osgood Building, 127 Lisbon St., will be Oct. 26. All her many friends will be cordially welcomed.

50 years ago, 1958

Rosario Pelletier of Lewiston and Frank Anastasio of Rumford were elected vice presidents of the Maine State Association of Barbers at the group’s annual meeting yesterday in Bangor.

The convention instructed its executive board to prepare minimum price and working hours legislation and present it to the next Legislature.

They also decided that the board should investigate the possibilities of instituting barber’s training on a vocational education basis somewhere in the state.

25 years ago, 1983

The LPL plus APL Tenth Anniversary Committee is preparing for the Hartford Ballet Company’s weeklong visit and public performance in the Lewiston-Auburn area. It is the Hartford’s first visit here and the longest engagement any dance troupe has had in the Twin City area. The dance company will be giving a full week of school performances next week and will culminate its visit with a public performance at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 29, at Lewiston Junior High School.

The Hartford Ballet Company tours nationally with its 18 dancers and six technical crew members. It will bring stage and lighting equipment, a complete sound system and a portable dance floor. Community supporters are providing additional equipment needed for the performances.
