Chris Bennett, manager of Lewiston’s F.W. Webb, announced his company is handing out “We support Joe the Plumber” T-shirts to the public. The shirt refers to the now-famous Joe who played a prominent role in the final presidential debate between Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain. McCain said Joe represents small businesses that will get taxed under Obama’s tax plan.

F.W. Webbs across New England have begun distributing the shirts. Bennett said they handed out 75 shirts, but placed an order for more.

Dems not done campaigning yet

With one full week to go before Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 4, Mainers have not seen the last of guest appearances by or for Democratic candidates.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, Democratic Senate nominee Tom Allen will be joined in Lewiston at the Franco-American Heritage Center at 5:30 p.m. by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell. The two will be participating in a community supper and campaigning on behalf of Allen.

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Democratic incumbent Rep. Mike Michaud, of Maine’s 2nd District, will be holding his own campaign stop at the Franco-American Heritage Center, at 4 p.m. Michaud will be joined by Adam Cote, a veteran and former Democratic House candidate from Maine’s 1st District.

Also on Wednesday, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean will be campaigning at the University of Maine at Farmington at 6:30 p.m. in Thomas Auditorium. Dean, who currently chairs the Democratic National Committee, will be promoting Democratic candidates up and down the ticket. He will also be at the University of Maine at Orono on Wednesday and in Portland on Thursday.

Name that tartan

Curious ‘signs’ of what appears to be a Scottish tartan have appeared in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Anyone know what they are for?
