Q. Why are you running for the County Commission?
A. I am seeking the office of county commissioner as I believe I can restore a cordial working relationship in county government with all departments working together for the common good and public safety of Androscoggin County. As a selectman, I understand we need to balance the needs of all levels of government with “affordability” but most importantly, we need to live within our means. As a commissioner, I will work to restore integrity and accountability to Androscoggin County Government.
Q. What do you think people want from the county government? What do you want?
A. In talking with people as I campaign, the sentiment seems to be the bickering has taken away from the functions of county government in the past 18 months. Rather than working for the people, the commission has spent too much time trying to justify its actions and not enough time working for the common good of the county. The constituents want action and problem-solving and not the attorney’s legal opinions presented. As a moderator and a selectman, I believe in order to solve problems and meet the needs of the county, the commissioner needs to know and understand the problems and concerns of its district. I will meet every board of selectmen and every town council and bring those concerns from each rural town in Androscoggin County to the meetings and work on solving the problems of tomorrow, today.
Q. Much of the commission’s work is spent overseeing spending. Do you agree with how the county is spending its money? What would your priorities be?
A. Having served on the Budget Committee, I understand how the process works. I will work for transparency and accountability in county government. I think people need to know what their tax dollars are used for. I will work to make the county budget accessible and available to be viewed on a county Web site. I will work for and promote representation from each district for the county Budget Committee. As the commissioner in this district has the largest number of rural communities, the importance of rural patrol must be addressed. If elected, I will strive for public safety and accountability in the budgeting process.
Q. Do you think a commissioner ought to reside in the district that elected him or her?
A. Yes, a commissioner should live within its district and how else can you represent your constituents if you are not among them?
Q. Do you favor a county charter?
A. If elected commissioner, I will bring forth the question of a county charter and send it to a full county referendum. The legislation is in place and the voters will have an opportunity to decide. This issue should be addressed and not ignored as it has been by the current commissioners.
