RUMFORD – Audrey P. Thompson, 80, of Rumford went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 25, with her family at her side. She resided on Franklin Street in Rumford, but lived with her daughter and family on Somerset Street in Rumford for the past two years.
She was born in Roxbury, July 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Merle and Myrtle (Bean) Philbrick. She attended schools in Mexico. She worked at Diamond International for 28 years and worked at G.H. Bass and McDonald’s before her retirement in 1990.
She was a member of the Mexico First Baptist Church and also served as a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed crocheting, making crazy quilts, knitting mittens and gave thousands of pairs over the years to her family, local charities, churches and many local children. She was known as the “the mitten lady.”
She loved to read the Bible and listen to praise and worship music.
She enjoyed doing word circle puzzles and watching the local country singers and musicians on Channel 7. She loved traveling the coast of Maine, going for rides and looking for moose, shopping at Wal-Mart and eating maple walnut ice cream. She was a wonderful wife and mother and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will forever be remembered by many as “Nana.”
She was married in Rumford, on Dec. 24, 1947, to Aubrey A. Thompson, who predeceased her on June 11, 2005. Other survivors include two sons, Dale Thompson and wife, Stacy and Donald Thompson and wife, Vicky, of Rumford; three daughters, Karen Wolfe and husband, Russell, of Saltillo, Tenn., Sandra Shaw and husband, Steve, of Edgecomb and Ronda Shaw and husband, Chris, of Rumford; two brothers, Gary Philbrick of Rumford and Rodney Philbrick and wife, Stella, of Rumford; four sisters, Peggy DeRouche and husband, Norman, of Rumford, Esley Thompson of Mexico, Patty Austin and husband, Allen, of Rumford and Beverly Boyle and husband, Lee, of Mexico; two sisters-in-law, Charlene Cormier and Gloria Sites of Sabattus; 10 grandchildren, Heidi Dolloff, Michelle Leonard, Kevin Breton, Toby Thompson, Andy and Angela Walton, Craig and Mathew Shaw and Jason and Joel Thompson; eight great-grandchildren, Ben, Becca, Garrett, Sage, Rachel, Cameron, Noah and Ryan; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Nathaniel and Kaylee.
She was predeceased by brothers, Johnny, Marshall, Glendon and Richard Philbrick; sisters, Muriel Downs, Methyl Cantin, Glory Leighton, Polly Robinson, Mona Young and Barbara Bouchard; grandsons, Joshua and Jonathan Thompson; and great-grandsons, Joseph and Lucas Dolloff.
