WEST PARIS – As plans to rebuild the grandstand at the town sports complex proceed, Town Manager John White told selectmen Thursday that fundraisers are scheduled to make sure everything is covered.
The 70- by 30-foot wooden bleachers at the Harold C. Perham Athletic Complex on High Street were destroyed by fire July 24. The new grandstand will be similar but smaller and hold about 300 people, West Paris Athletic Association President Jeff Shock has said.
The town has enough money pledged through donations and from insurance to cover the $55,000 estimated cost, but the fundraising supper, auction, raffle and dance Saturday, Nov. 8, are for contingencies, officials said.
“With insurance and other donations we should have what we need if estimates for the rebuild are accurate, but too often estimates tend to fall short. So we decided to raise some extra funding just in case,” White said.
Because the building code requires that the grandstand be on a cement foundation, the town has to raise an estimated $7,000 to $12,000 for that work, Shock said. So far, it has about $1,100 toward it, he said in mid-October.
White said the Grandstand Rebuilding Committee will hold the fundraiser at the Jackson-Silver American Legion Hall on Gore Road in Locke Mills. The potluck supper will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets for the silent auction will go on sale at 5 p.m. and drawings for items will begin at 7 p.m. The BYOB dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight with music by the group Suspects. There will also be a 50/50 raffle at the dance.
Tickets cost $7 for the supper; $10 for the dance; $15 for both. Auction tickets are $2.50 for 10; or $10 for 50.
All tickets are available at the town office or at the door Nov. 8.
In other business White said polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town office on Tuesday, Nov. 4. He said he expects a big turnout.
“I estimate we probably will see up to 800 voters casting ballots on the 4th. We are definitely going be busy and can expect a late night when the counting is done,” White said.
