BETHEL – A New Hampshire man remained in critical condition in a Portland hospital Monday night after an accident early Saturday morning left him trapped under his car for several minutes.

Chief Alan Carr of the Bethel Police Department said that Richard Tabor of Derry, N.H., was staying with his wife at one of the condos at the Bethel Inn and Country Club. He was returning to his Fairway Road condo around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning when he lost control of his Ford SUV on a curve and drove off the left side of the road.

The vehicle hit an embankment and slid sideways into a stone wall, which caused it to flip over and slide into one of the condos. Tabor was thrown from the vehicle and was pinned under it when rescue crews arrived. Carr said Tabor was trapped for several minutes.

Tabor was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland. His condition was listed as critical, a nursing supervisor said.

Carr said the crash remains under investigation and that alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor. Also under investigation is whether or not Tabor’s wife was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Carr said.
