WATERVILLE (AP) – An Army National Guard soldier who graduated from a Maine high school has died in Afghanistan.

Deon Taylor was killed in action last Wednesday. The 30-year-old Taylor, who was a New York City police officer, had visited Maine as a child in the Fresh Air Fund outdoors program. He attended Carrabec High School in North Anson for two years before graduating in 1995.

Taylor joined the New York Police Department in 2005. He was on a second tour of Army duty in Afghanistan when a roadside bomb killed him.

Rose and Steve Church of Highland Plantation remember Taylor fondly as his Fresh Air Fund host parents. Rose Church says “He was my Christmas in July.”
