LEWISTON – An escapee from a state prison was arrested on Sabattus Street Tuesday night, driving a truck he allegedly stole that morning.

Kris Nadeau, 33, of Jacksonville, Fla., failed to report to the Bolduc Correctional Facility in Warren after his work-release shift ended Tuesday morning, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.

Police say Nadeau stole a 1996 maroon F-150 Ford pickup and left the area – but not before getting into a hit-and-run accident in Knox County, according to the sheriff.

Deputy Nate McNally spotted the truck driving south on Sabattus Street at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

“We do know that he has ties to the Lewiston-Auburn area, so we were looking for him,” said Chief Deputy Michael Ward.

According to sheriff’s reports, Nadeau turned into the parking lot of Cumberland Farms with McNally directly behind him. Nadeau was arrested without incident as soon as he stepped out of the truck.

Nadeau was serving a three-year, nine-month sentence at the state prison for operating a vehicle after a habitual-offender license revocation. He was also convicted of eluding an officer and operating a vehicle under the influence in a January 2005 incident.

He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail on Tuesday and faces charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, aggravated operating after habitual offender revocation, unlawful possession of a scheduled drug, and other charges stemming from the wreck Tuesday in Knox County.
