JAY – Police, along with a drug-detecting police dog, did a check of the Jay middle and high school parking lots Friday in an ongoing effort to keep the campus drug-free. An illegal substance was detected in one vehicle on site that did not belong to students or staff, officials said.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy David Rackliffe and canine, Odin, and Jay Police Chief Larry White, Detective Drew Hufnagel and officer Michael Mejia conducted the walk-through, White said.
“The dog hit on a few vehicles but nothing substantial was found,” White said. “The vehicle was not student related.”
In one vehicle the canine indicated some illegal substance was found, he said, and a report will be sent to the Franklin County District Attorneys Office for review. White declined to name the substance.
Jay School Superintendent Robert Wall said it was a vehicle that was on site and it was not a student’s or a staff member’s vehicle.
“As you know, it’s going to be an ongoing situation that we have a drug-free campus and we’re going to do everything we can to ensure our students’ safety, and if it takes these activities taking place on an ongoing basis, we will do that,” Wall said. “We appreciate the cooperation of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Jay Police Department in our efforts to have a drug-free campus.”
