I laughed as I read the Sun Journal editorial claiming John McCain as the choice for president. “Surely this must be a joke,” I said to myself. I searched the paper for the words “Gotcha” or even “Just kidding.”

I agree, there was a time when McCain was the agent of change this country needed. A true centrist. America before party politics. A true American hero to unite the country and lead it into the future. But, as his present campaign has shown, his ability to lead has diminished over the years.

A presidential candidate has very few chances to show the qualities needed to be president. Choosing a running mate is a presidential decision. The choice of Gov. Palin was poor at best.

As both candidates faced a national crisis, all Americans had the chance to see their candidate think and act on a presidential level. Sen. Obama, calm and thoughtful, spoke carefully not to escalate the fears of the American people.

Sen. McCain began telling people the economy was sound. He then began to disintegrate into a series of rash, panicky actions and statements, leaving many Americans scratching their heads, praying for him to stop.

It was a sad display.

The Sun Journal has a right to endorse the candidate of its choice. However, based on everything I have seen, believing the old John McCain will surface is a gamble I cannot take with my vote.
