Dear Sun Spots: We would like to get a concealed weapons permit. Do you know where we could take a firearm safety class in the Lewiston area? Thanks for all you do. – Scott, Leeds.

Answer: While we did not find any courses available in Lewiston, contact Maine CWP Training in Harrison. Personal protection courses are scheduled based on the number of registrants. They had three courses in October, so they are anticipating a November class. Contact Paul Mattson at 583-4723 (before 8 p.m.) to register or visit www.mainecwptraining.com for a registration form. Paul pointed out that there is a variety of people who take the course. His next class includes five women over the age of 60 in attendance.

Also contact Jeff Weinstein, director, at FirearmSafety.net in Yarmouth at 846-3000 for information on upcoming courses. They offer an NRA personal protection course on a monthly basis (except summers and December). The first session is an eight-hour class which covers class materials; second session is two hours at a firing range. They have been offering this specific course for about 10 years and teaching gun safety for nearly 50 years. You can also visit their Web site, www.firearmsafety.net.

To obtain a concealed weapons permit application packet, after completing the course, call the Maine State Police at 624-7210, press 0 and leave your name and address. If you have Internet access, visit www.state.me.us/dps/msp/licenses/weapons_permits.html and download a copy of the concealed firearms booklet and a concealed firearms permit application. If you are unable to attend a firearms safety course, Sgt. Gomane of the Maine State Police notes that they will also accept a hunter’s safety course that includes handgun safety, a military DD214, or a letter from a current sworn police office on departmental stationary stating that you have sufficient knowledge of handgun safety for a concealed firearms permit.

Dear Sun Spots: This is in response to Carrie of Dixfield and her interest in Fels-Naphtha soap, Sun Spots, Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008. My grandmother, Minnie Chase, cleaned a 6-year-old grandson’s dirty mouth with the foul tasting stuff and it only took one cleansing. The year was 1951 and I can still taste it. – Charles J. Dear Sun Spots: I have taken the Sun Journal for a number of years and I think your section is one of the best features in the paper. I have never asked for help before but am now. I have been trying for a week to set up my computer on the Verizon/FairPoint Internet service. I have called Verizon tech support a number of times but cannot always understand the support person. My question is, do you know of anyone in the Norway, Paris or Oxford area who would stop by my place and show me how to complete the setup on Verizon/FairPoint? They can call me at 743-6777. If they could help I would expect to pay a reasonable price. I will be 89 years old in a few days, so I don’t catch onto their computer lingo as fast as I used to. – No Name, South Paris.

Dear Sun Spots: The Turner Public Library is, for the second year, sponsoring an ongoing Silent Auction of interesting articles ranging from hand made items to a gift certificate for a getaway weekend in New Hampshire. Everything will be on display for bidding at the library at 98 Matthews Way Turner from November 8 through December 6 every Tuesday and Thursday from 12-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
