BRUNSWICK – Hugh Martin Curtis, 82, of Katherine Street, Brunswick, died Friday, Oct. 31, at home with his daughter Nancy and her husband Michael.
He was born in Lisbon Falls on May 29, 1926, the youngest of 14 children to Linwood Lee and Rebecca Lillian Tuttle Curtis.
He graduated from Bridgton Academy and attended the University of Maine. He graduated from the Police Academy in 1957 and proudly served as a state trooper for 10 years before moving on to the Secretary of State’s office, where he served as a hearings officer for the Motor Vehicle Department, retiring in 1975.
In 1950, he married Geraldine Sherman Curtis. They were married for 26 years and raised three children together.
He fought in the European Theater during World War II in the 3rd Army 748 Tank Battalion, 55th Company B 26th Rogue Yankee Division. He spoke of the honor of having served on an international patrol that included American, French, British and Russian soldiers guarding General Brandt.
He was an accomplished athlete, twice achieving a hole-in-one which he attributed to beginner’s luck and alleged sandbagging. In his younger years he played for the New England Amateur Hockey Association and for a state wide baseball farm league.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman spending many happy hours with his son, son-in-law, grandsons and brothers. His love for the game of cribbage earned him a 29 hand. He was a great dancer and appreciator of the big bands.
He enjoyed life and was a pleasure to be around because he so appreciated what each day brought to him.
He is survived by his children, Rebecca Ann Curtis and husband, Jeffrey Peters, of Waldo, Thomas Warren Curtis and partner Leslie Bettinger of Brunswick, and Nancy Ann Curtis-Strange and husband, Michael, of Brunswick; two brothers, Norman Stetson Curtis of York, and Ronald Gordon Curtis of Lewiston; a sister, Pearl Aldana Mottram of Lewiston; and beloved grandchildren, Thomas Jefferson Strange, Rosamond Curtis Peters, Nathan Martin Strange, Megan Rose Curtis and Adam Warren Curtis.
He was predeceased by six brothers, Joseph Franklin Leroy, Elmer Linwood, Edren Frederick, Forest Melvin, Alden Hilton and Albert Harlan; four sisters, Vesta Rosamond, Beatrice Marion, Carlyiss Norean and Eughenia Leah; and stepfather, Warren Goddard.
