I am deeply disappointed in the Sun Journal’s endorsement of Sen. John McCain. When a candidate runs a campaign built on divisiveness, fear and lies, and demonstrates a disconcerting inability to run a competent and honest campaign, that candidate is not worthy of people’s votes.
McCain’s cynical choice of his running mate makes him a risky candidate and confirms his shift to a politics of division. For all that he has touted his record in bipartisanship, he has made choices in this campaign that undercut that argument in a serious and disturbing fashion.
Barack Obama brings out the best in people, asking people to vote our hopes and aspirations and not our fears.
He has the intelligence, calm, strength and character to be a great president. His record of pragmatic decision-making, and his ability to listen to all sides and build consensus will serve him well.
His former colleague from the University of Chicago, Cass R. Sunstein, concludes his ringing endorsement of Obama thusly: “As president, Barack Obama would be a genuine uniter. If he proves able to achieve great things, for his nation and for the world, it will be, above all, for that reason.”
This is not something that can be said of John McCain. He has sold his soul for the sake of an election and put his personal ambition ahead of the good of our country. Such behavior and choices are not worthy of endorsement.
