Edward Little class of ’58 holds its golden reunion

AUBURN – The Edward Little High School Class of 1958 held its 50-year reunion Sept. 20. Classmates gathered at Martindale Country Club for a photo. The class has held a reunion every five years since graduation. However, this year was the most successful and attended by most members of the class of 1958.

Robert Tiner was master of ceremonies; Paul Lodge, class vice president, welcomed the classmates; and Frances Lodge gave the opening prayer.

Fred Westerberg entertained the class by singing “You Are Always on My Mind.” A moment of silence was observed for the deceased classmates. A plaque was awarded to Wanda Foss Kimbrough for her 10 years of service as chairwoman of the Reunion Committee.

Nancy Arnold Davenport, Judy Spofford Sargent and Daphne Irish Ward solicited raffle items and gift certificates, and local merchants donated. Classmate Roland Lachance, through his employer, donated a garden bench, which was won by Stephen Marsden of Auburn. Also in celebration of the 50th reunion, a cash prize of $50 was won by David Gilman of Mansfield, Texas.

Harry Jones, a former teacher and marching band instructor at Edward Little High School, was a special guest. Classmates greeted Jones and shared stories. Jones was instrumental in organizing a class trip to Washington, D.C., 49 years ago. He had the students meet with Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, and she presented them with a flag that had flown over the capitol.

All classmates joined in singing the Edward Little class song written by George Bower, class of 1903.

Each classmate was given a memory book containing names and addresses of almost all classmates. A list of missing classmates was included. Paul and Daphne Ward have kept track of the addresses of almost all the classmates for 50 years.

Included in the memory book was a poem “Behold the Blessed Nation” by Henry Davenport. The poem is in the Ronald Reagan Library in California. Included was a picture of the deceased classmates. Also included was a brief history of Edward Little High School and a special page refreshing classmates’ memories of events, songs and movies popular in 1958.

After a buffet meal, classmates socialized. Bill Burke traveled from the Philippines.

Classmates are now looking forward to their annual “mini reunion” held in July at Paul Lodge’s home in Minot. A flyer is sent out in May announcing the date. The Reunion Committee has gotten together for such events in the past as taking a canoe trip down the Saco River, dining out, getting together with classmates when they return to Maine, Christmas parties and sending cards to sick classmates.

Reunion Committee included Nancy Arnold Davenport, Henry Davenport, Anita Lawler Hamel, Sandra Dudzik Hodgkins, William Lawler, Barbara Norcross Mushlit, Dorothy Crowley Noel, Paul Lodge, Marie Dion Ouellette, Judy Peterson Pike, Judy Spofford Sargent, David Sargent, Stephen Sedgeley, Robert Tiner, Daphne Irish Ward, Paul Ward, Wanda Foss Kimbrough, Raymond Simond.
