PARIS – The Maine Veterans’ Home, South Paris, has announced that James Lehr II is its Veteran of the Month.
Lehr was born in Louisville, Ky., on April 18, 1947. He lived there for several years before moving with his family to Indiana. Lehr attended one year of college before enlisting in the Marines in April 1966.
He went to boot camp in San Diego, Calif., then to supply school in North Carolina and Virginia.
Lehr was shipped out to Vietnam, traveling by boat via Hawaii and Okinawa. He served as a supply clerk during his deployment, earning a promotion for his “excellent job keeping the unit in supplies.” His whole unit received the Presidential Unit Citation. Lehr was discharged in April 1969.
He was married in 1968 and after he was discharged he worked as an insurance salesman in Kentucky. Lehr and his wife moved to Washington, D.C., and he went into restaurant management.
Lehr has three children and a grandson. He loves being a father and grandfather and often remarks that “family is everything.”
His favorite season is fall and he enjoys taking trips to see the leaves change. Lehr moved to the Maine Veterans’ Home in 2007 and is a resident on the C Unit.
