BETHEL – Recent research conducted at the Bethel Historical Society’s Regional History Center reveals that a former U.S. congressman had Bethel and Gould Academy ties. Society Director Stanley R. Howe has announced that James Sullivan Wiley, a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, elected as a Democrat, represented Maine in the 30th Congress (March 4, 1847 to March 4, 1849).
Although born in Mercer, he later lived in Bethel, was a student at Gould Academy and graduated from Colby College. After his graduation, he moved to Dover and was an instructor in Foxcroft Academy.
Wiley later studied law and was admitted to the Penobscot County bar in 1839. Beginning the practice of law in Dover, he subsequently moved to Fryeburg in 1889 and continued the practice of law until his death on Dec. 21, 1889. He is buried in the Smart Hill Cemetery in Lovell.
