STOCKTON SPRINGS (AP) – An initial court appearance is expected Monday for a 55-year-old Searsport man who authorities allege temporarily held 11 fifth-graders hostage at an elementary school before being taken into custody without any harm to the children.

Randall Hofland, who had been sought since the night of Oct. 23 for allegedly pointing a gun at a local police officer who stopped him during a seat belt safety check in Searsport, was taken to the Waldo County Jail after Friday’s incident at Stockton Springs Elementary School.

Hofland, who was tackled outside a classroom by a state trooper, had released all the students and had given his loaded handgun to one of them. Hofland was charged Friday with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon for the Oct. 23 incident.

Last call for voters in Massachusetts

BOSTON (AP) – Massachusetts voters have until noon on Monday to pick up absentee ballots if they can’t get to their local polling location on Tuesday.

Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin said that under state law, the cut off to get an absentee ballot is noon. Those ballots must still be turned into by the end of voting on Tuesday.

Galvin said the state has also established a new Web site to help voters find out where they have to go on Tuesday to cast their ballot.

Galvin has already predicted a record voter turnout on Election Day.
