SANFORD – The Seacoast United Maine (formerly Coastal Soccer Club) U12 girls’ Freedom team competed and won in its division at the recent Sanford Columbus Day tournament.

Freedom faced two tough teams from the Grasshopper Football Club from the metro west Boston area and a very talented team from Scarborough. In the preliminary round, Freedom lost its first game to Grasshopper Fortuna 4-2 and won against Scarborough 5-2 and Grasshopper Borrusia 6-4.

In the semifinal game, after being down 1-0 at halftime against Grasshopper Fortuna, Freedom battled back for a 3-1 victory to move on to the championship game against Grasshopper Borrusia.

A scoreless tie held up in the exciting final until halfway through the second overtime period, when a foul was committed at the 20-yard mark. It resulted in a perfectly placed, hard shot in the top center of the net which broke the tie for the sudden death win.

The Freedom’s defensive midfield was strong trhoughout and was a key factor in the team’s success over the weekend. Until this year, the Grasshopper teams had not lost a game at this tournament.
